Alternate reality’s Japan – or rather, The Greater Republic of East Asia – is a police state, one where the government and the people are constantly at odds with each other, and this anger, this hatred, this bitterness is eventually directed at those who are least at fault: the children. Thrust into a cruel society, the younger generation constantly rebels against the dark world around them, which decides to punish them for their misbehavior with a certain game, called Battle Royale. A government-sponsored event, it takes numerous times an year, and is something all teenagers are made to hate and fear.

The rules are simple. A class of high school freshmen students – usually numbering somewhere around 40 – are placed on a remote island and made to kill each other. Only one student may leave the island alive, and, if the game goes too long without the kids killing each other, they will all die. Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten.

Kazama’s run-in with the program took place in December, where he suddenly found himself shivering in the forest, clutching a sniper rifle that he had little knowledge of how to use. He was just your average high-school student, a bit quiet, but otherwise nice, with friends and a family and a normal life. Pity it all ended there.

There was a reason why he was a prominent member of the archery club. Hidden under a patch of brush and snow, he kept his eye glued to the scope of his rifle, and shot at anyone who went by. Silent, deadly, and effective, he was everything a person could have wished from a sniper so young. Killing a total of eight people, he emerged as the victor from the game, and was hailed by the media as a new genius sharpshooter. However, he didn’t leave the game whole. The three days he’d spent alone, unable to make a single noise for fear of being discovered and killed, had shattered him, and he found himself unable to speak to others without feeling a slight pang of fear.

Of course, the end of the “program” didn’t mean the end of his troubles. Unable to return to living a normal life, he instead took to wandering from anti-government group to anti-government group, using his skills as a sniper to help in whatever way he could to fight against the tyranny that plagued the country and had forced him to kill the people who had been so close to him.

Through a series of events, he ended up in a group called the Wild Seven, a small gathering of people who had similarly survived the bloody game, who harbored similar hatred for the adults who had ruined them. The group went down in history for the fantastic terrorist bombing of Tokyo that leveled a half-dozen skyscrapers, including three major governmental facilities, and killed over three thousand people. Now with a warrant out for his capture, dead or alive, he prepared himself for the climax of the fight.

The declaration of war. The invasion of their island stronghold. The last stand. Twenty-seven kills. Three of the Wild Seven dead. He was aiming for his twenty-eighth kill when he was caught from behind and thrown out of his sniping post, down to where the group of armed soldiers waited. Surrounded by a circle of machine-gun barrels, he calmly waited for the firing to begin; the last thing he heard was the leader screaming his name.

He opened his eyes to find himself before the city of domes.

At a solid 6’3” with a lean, sinewy build, he just looks somewhat forbidding from the first place. His facial features are sharp, especially his eyes, which are usually narrowed into a half-sleepy, half-wary glare at most times. Longish bangs fall over his forehead and are parted to the side to avoid obscuring his vision, his layered neck-length hair usually brushed into a somewhat messy style, topped off with a wool hat. His expression is usually set into a controlled blank that rarely changes, revealing little to nothing about his thoughts and feelings.

The way he dresses is just as concealing as his expression, mostly for the sake of keeping warm during long nights of reconnaissance, but also to hide the numerous scars that line his body. Usually donning several layers, he’s careful to cover up almost every possible inch of himself, starting with a light bulletproof vest. Since guerrilla soldiers rarely have access to the latest fashion, and he pays more attention to practicality than to his appearances, most of his clothes are in dull colors, muted browns and camouflage greens as to help keep him hidden from enemy eyes. A light packs hangs at his waist, filled with spare cartridges of bullets, a combat knife, and other tools for survival. Boots, leather half-gloves and a red scarf bearing the emblem of the Wild Seven top off his wardrobe.

He’s scarred, to put it simply.

Though he might have been more open when he was younger, his experiences have made him close off his emotions, and he avoids having to be sociable unless there’s a really good reason for it. Wary, suspicious, and always on the alert, he can often be seen as overly cold.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s “bad.” Strictly loyal to his cause and, in effect, those who he think would best carry out the fight against the greater evil, he is extremely efficient and business-like, especially in terms of protecting those he is aligned under. Even just to people who he ends up being around with, he does feel a sort of distant comradeship. It’s just that these feelings are never shown. Because, in the past, he’s had to kill the people close to him, he tries to distance himself from anyone around him, especially those he wants to keep safe.

Otherwise, to those he doesn’t know well, he’s fairly apathetic. Though speaking in moderately polite tones – true to the classic Japanese lifestyle he learned growing up – he won’t talk any more than is necessary, and will definitely avoid revealing anything significant about himself unless he is sure that the person can be trusted.

[ . 強さ . ]

Although he’s just a normal human being without any magical powers, unlike most of the citizens of the city, who seem to be supernatural or magical beings, at least he’s a fairly highly skilled human. His skills as a sniper are among the best of the best, and he’s had much experience with firearms and with killing people. Give him his rifle and a target, and he can hit it from anywhere as long as it’s within range of the gun. Though sniping’s his strongest suit, he’s also better than your average person at using handguns, engaging in hand-to-hand combat, dealing with explosives, and working with hacking. Basically, any skill that a good guerilla soldier needs, he can do it.

His will is also quite strong, meaning his determination is impressive. Once he puts his mind to a task, he will do it. The same goes to dedication to a person. Though he rarely associates with anyone, once he decides that a person is worth protecting, he will guard that person no matter what it takes, even willing to put his own life at risk.

[ . 弱点 . ]

While his fighting skills are certainly impressive, his social skills are sorely lacking. He’s terrible at communicating with people, especially with strangers, and tends to shy away from large crowds due to his high mistrust of others. Even with people he knows, it takes a while for him to come to trust them, and, until then, he’ll be pretty quiet and wary.

His tendency to distance himself from other can also be a problem, since that means he will rarely – if ever – ask for help from others. To put it nicely, he’s self-dependant, but, more accurately, if he ever gets in trouble, it’s more than likely that he’ll try to fight by himself and end up in pretty hot water.
